Synopsis
Tata Power secured a SECI contract to supply 324 MW from its 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project in Maharashtra. The project, scheduled for 2029, will provide eight hours of energy storage under a 40-year agreement.

Tata Power on Monday announced that it has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) to supply 324 MW of electricity from its 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project (PSP) in Maharashtra. The project was awarded under SECI's competitive bidding process for 1,500 MW / 12,000 MWh of pumped hydro storage capacity and will operate under a 40-year Pumped Storage Purchase (PSP) Agreement.
The Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Project, scheduled for commissioning by 2029, will provide eight hours of energy storage, helping meet peak electricity demand while supporting the integration of renewable energy into India's power grid. The award further strengthens Tata Power's position in the fast-growing renewable energy and energy storage sectors.

According to the company, the project was secured through an e-reverse auction conducted by SECI under its tariff-based global competitive bidding process. The contract involves supplying 324 MW of power from Tata Power's 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project, which is being developed in Maharashtra under the Build, Own and Operate (BOO) model. The project is expected to play a key role in providing reliable electricity during periods of high demand by storing surplus renewable energy and dispatching it when required.
| Particular | Details |

The Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project will be connected to the 765/400 kV South Kalamb Central Transmission Utility (CTU) Substation through the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS). The storage facility will help convert surplus electricity generated from solar and wind projects during the day into dispatchable power that can be supplied during evening and peak demand hours.
Long-duration pumped hydro storage projects are becoming increasingly important as India expands its renewable energy capacity. These projects improve grid stability by balancing intermittent renewable generation and ensuring a reliable power supply even when solar and wind generation declines.
The latest award further strengthens Tata Power's presence in the long-duration energy storage segment, which has emerged as a key component of India's energy transition strategy. The company said the project aligns with its broader clean energy roadmap and its Net Zero 2045 target.
With the addition of the Bhivpuri project, Tata Power continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio while supporting the country's objective of increasing clean energy capacity and improving grid reliability.
Following the SECI award, Tata Power's total clean and green energy portfolio has reached 17.5 GW, including projects under development. The company currently has a 9.6 GW pipeline, of which 2.8 GW comprises pumped hydro storage projects.
| Particular | Capacity |
|---|---|
| Total Operational & Pipeline Capacity | Over 26 GW |
| Clean & Green Portfolio | 17.5 GW |
| Renewable Pipeline | 9.6 GW |
| Pumped Hydro Capacity | 2.8 GW |
| Thermal Generation Capacity | 8.9 GW |
The company maintains a diversified generation portfolio that includes renewable energy, hydroelectric projects and thermal power assets, enabling it to serve both conventional and clean energy demand across India.
Tata Power Company Ltd, a part of the Tata Group, is one of India's largest integrated power companies with operations spanning power generation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, energy storage, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and rooftop solar solutions. The company has been expanding its renewable energy business through large-scale solar, wind and pumped hydro storage projects as part of its long-term clean energy strategy.
Tata Power has received a Letter of Award from SECI to supply 324 MW of electricity from its 1,000 MW Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project in Maharashtra under a 40-year Pumped Storage Purchase Agreement.
The Bhivpuri Pumped Hydro Storage Project is scheduled to be commissioned in 2029 and will provide eight hours of energy storage to support reliable electricity supply during peak demand periods.
A pumped hydro storage project stores surplus electricity by pumping water to a higher reservoir during periods of low demand and releases it through turbines to generate electricity when demand increases, helping balance renewable energy generation.
Following the latest SECI award, Tata Power's clean and green energy portfolio stands at 17.5 GW, including projects under construction, with a renewable energy pipeline of 9.6 GW and 2.8 GW of pumped hydro storage capacity.
The SECI contract strengthens Tata Power's position in India's growing energy storage market, supports the integration of renewable energy into the national grid and aligns with the company's Net Zero 2045 strategy.
