Synopsis
Claude and ChatGPT are competing for the lead in consumer AI, enterprise adoption and future AI growth as Anthropic gains ground with Claude.

Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/)'s Claude is gaining ground on OpenAI's ChatGPT, with estimated mobile consumer revenue rising sharply in 2026. However, ChatGPT still has a much larger consumer base and higher mobile revenue, keeping OpenAI ahead on scale. App analytics firm AppMagic estimated that Claude generated $97.2 million in mobile consumer revenue in July 2026, compared with $7.5 million in January. ChatGPT generated an estimated $312.2 million in July.
The nearly 1,200% rise in Claude's mobile revenue does not represent Anthropic's total company revenue. The figure covers estimated consumer spending through the Claude mobile app on Apple's App Store and Google Play.
| Mobile metric | Claude | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| January revenue | $7.5 million | About $243.9 million |
| July revenue | $97.2 million | $312.2 million |
| January to July growth | About 1,196% | 28% |
| July downloads | 16.6 million | 77.8 million |
Claude's July mobile revenue was still less than one third of ChatGPT's, but the gap has narrowed. Claude generated about 31 cents for every $1 of ChatGPT mobile revenue in July, compared with about 3 cents in January. The figures exclude web subscriptions, enterprise contracts and API revenue, so they should not be treated as a direct comparison of total company revenue.
OpenAI reported that ChatGPT had reached 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers by February 2026. That gives ChatGPT a much larger consumer base than Claude. Claude's stronger mobile growth therefore comes from a much smaller starting point. The latest app data also shows the difference in downloads, with Claude at 16.6 million in July compared with 77.8 million for ChatGPT. This means Anthropic is closing the gap in monetisation faster than it is closing the gap in users.
The bigger competitive story is outside mobile apps. Anthropic has built a strong position among businesses, particularly in coding and other complex work. Anthropic said its annualised revenue run rate crossed $47 billion in May 2026, after raising $65 billion at a $965 billion post money valuation. That valuation was above OpenAI's reported $852 billion valuation at the time. Claude Code has also become an important part of Anthropic's business strategy. The company has focused heavily on developers and enterprise customers, while OpenAI has used ChatGPT's large consumer audience to expand into business services.
The two companies now have different strengths. ChatGPT leads in consumer reach, brand recognition and product breadth. OpenAI has built a large audience that can be used to introduce new services such as coding, research and agent tools. Claude is gaining ground in enterprise AI and coding. Anthropic's growth shows that a smaller user base can still generate substantial revenue when users rely on the product for high value work.
| Area | Current position |
|---|---|
| Consumer users | ChatGPT leads |
| Mobile revenue | ChatGPT leads |
| Mobile revenue growth | Claude leads |
| Enterprise momentum | Claude is gaining |
| Coding | Strong competition |
| Product breadth | ChatGPT leads |
| Private valuation | Anthropic leads |
The growing competition between Anthropic and OpenAI is also important for potential public listings. Anthropic's IPO plans have attracted significant attention, with Reuters reporting that the company is now expected to begin marketing its IPO in mid October 2026, later than previously expected. The potential valuation could reach as much as $2 trillion. Anthropic's latest private valuation of $965 billion gives investors an early reference point, but a public market valuation will depend on revenue quality, margins, computing costs and future growth. For OpenAI, the bigger question is whether its huge consumer reach can translate into enough revenue and profit to support its valuation.
The latest numbers show that Claude is no longer simply a smaller alternative to ChatGPT. Anthropic is building a strong business around enterprise customers and coding while also gaining consumer traction. ChatGPT remains far ahead in mobile revenue and user reach. The next stage of the AI race will depend less on download numbers and more on how effectively both companies turn AI usage into recurring revenue, enterprise spending and sustainable margins. The upcoming IPO filings from Anthropic and potentially OpenAI will give investors a clearer view of which company has the stronger financial model.
