Synopsis
PCBL Chemical shares fell nearly 10% despite reporting strong Q1 FY27 earnings. Analysts cited one time inventory gains, profit booking and cautious brokerage outlooks as key reasons behind the sharp decline.

Shares of PCBL Chemical Ltd. came under heavy selling pressure on Thursday, falling nearly 10% despite the company reporting a robust set of financial results for the first quarter of FY2026-27. The sharp correction surprised investors as the carbon black manufacturer posted strong growth in revenue, profitability and earnings. However, analysts pointed out that a significant portion of the quarterly performance was supported by one time inventory gains, prompting investors to book profits after the recent rally.
The stock declined as much as 10.21% during the trading session to an intraday low of ₹328.50, erasing a large part of the gains recorded after the company announced its June quarter earnings and interim dividend. Market participants appeared to focus more on the quality and sustainability of earnings than on the headline profit growth, resulting in broad based selling across the counter.
Brokerages remained constructive on the company's long term business prospects but highlighted that investors should not expect the exceptionally strong quarterly profitability to continue at the same pace, particularly if inventory gains reverse and crude oil prices remain volatile.
| Metric | Value |

PCBL Chemical reported a healthy set of numbers for the June quarter, supported by higher realizations in its carbon black and power businesses. The company posted a 65% year on year increase in net profit to ₹155 crore, while revenue also registered healthy double digit growth. Operating performance remained strong during the quarter, supported by improved margins and better realizations across its core businesses.
However, several brokerages highlighted that the results included approximately ₹70 crore of non recurring inventory gains, which provided a temporary boost to profitability. Adjusting for these gains, analysts believe the underlying operating performance remained healthy but was less extraordinary than the reported numbers suggested.
| Particulars | Performance |
|---|---|
| Net Profit Growth | 65% YoY |
| Net Profit | ₹155 crore |
| Revenue Growth | 17% YoY |
| Adjusted EBITDA Growth | 8.3% YoY |
| One Time Inventory Gain | Around ₹70 crore |
The decline in PCBL Chemical shares was primarily driven by concerns over the sustainability of earnings rather than the quarterly numbers themselves. Investors generally reward companies that deliver consistent operational improvements, but they often discount profits generated from one off gains that are unlikely to be repeated in future quarters.
Analysts noted that nearly ₹70 crore of inventory gains contributed to the quarter's profitability. Such gains typically arise from favourable raw material price movements and may not recur in subsequent quarters. If crude oil prices continue to decline, companies could instead face inventory losses or customer destocking, which may weigh on profitability during the coming quarters.
The sharp rise in the stock following the earnings announcement and the declaration of an interim dividend of ₹4.50 per share also encouraged profit booking, adding further pressure on the share price.
ICICI Securities acknowledged the company's strong quarterly performance but remained cautious about the near term outlook. The brokerage expects volatility in the coming quarters because lower crude oil prices could trigger inventory losses and slower customer buying as distributors reduce inventory levels.
Despite these concerns, the brokerage said PCBL continues to focus on improving profitability instead of chasing higher sales volumes. It also noted that demand in the domestic market remains healthy, while exports to premium markets such as Europe and the United States are expected to increase over time.
The brokerage raised its FY27 and FY28 EBITDA estimates and increased its 12 month target price to ₹315 from ₹270 after assigning a higher valuation multiple. However, it retained its Reduce recommendation on the stock because of limited upside from current levels.
| Particular | View |
|---|---|
| Rating | Reduce |
| Target Price | ₹315 |
| Previous Target | ₹270 |
| Key Concern | Inventory gains and crude price volatility |
| Long Term Outlook | Positive but near term cautious |
Nuvama Institutional Equities also said that PCBL Chemical delivered a strong EBITDA performance during the June quarter, although part of the improvement was driven by inventory gains. Excluding the one time benefit, the brokerage estimated that EBITDA increased 8.3% year on year to around ₹340 crore, indicating that the company's core business continued to perform well.
Revenue increased 17% year on year, supported by better realizations in both the carbon black and power segments. However, Aquapharm continued to underperform because of higher raw material and logistics costs, which offset temporary pricing surcharges.
Even so, Nuvama remains optimistic about Aquapharm's long term prospects. The brokerage believes future growth will be supported by increasing demand for water treatment chemicals, expansion into green chelates and growth across international markets, although the expected recovery is taking longer than previously anticipated.
Apart from quarterly earnings, analysts highlighted that PCBL's strategic expansion plans remain on schedule. The company's investment in coal tar distillation is expected to diversify feedstock availability and reduce supply risks. Progress in the battery chemicals business has also been encouraging, with customer qualification processes moving forward steadily.
These investments are expected to strengthen PCBL's long term competitive position as demand for specialty chemicals and battery materials continues to grow.
Investors will closely monitor whether inventory related gains reverse during the second quarter, particularly if crude oil prices continue to soften. Margin trends, raw material costs, export demand, Aquapharm's recovery and progress in the battery chemicals business will remain the key factors influencing the company's earnings over the coming quarters.
Although near term volatility cannot be ruled out, analysts believe PCBL Chemical remains well positioned to benefit from long term demand growth in carbon black, specialty chemicals and sustainable industrial applications.
The stock declined because analysts said the strong quarterly earnings included around ₹70 crore of one time inventory gains, while investors also booked profits after the recent rally.
The company reported a 65% year on year increase in net profit to ₹155 crore.
ICICI Securities maintained a Reduce rating and raised its 12 month target price to ₹315.
Brokerages warned that falling crude oil prices could lead to inventory losses, customer destocking and margin volatility during the coming quarters.
Analysts remain positive on the company's long term growth prospects, supported by domestic demand, export opportunities, coal tar distillation expansion and investments in battery chemicals.
