Synopsis
UPL shares fell over 6% after Q1 FY27 results as Jefferies lowered its target price citing weaker than expected PAT and EBITDA despite revenue growth. Explore UPL's quarterly performance, brokerage outlook, management commentary, and the key factors impacting investor sentiment.

Shares of UPL witnessed heavy selling pressure on Tuesday, ending the trading session more than 6% lower after global brokerage Jefferies reduced its target price following the company's June quarter earnings. While UPL reported double digit revenue growth during the first quarter of FY27, investors focused on weaker than expected profitability, softer operating performance and concerns around earnings quality, triggering profit booking in the stock.
The decline came after UPL had gained for two consecutive trading sessions, with the latest correction reflecting cautious investor sentiment after the earnings announcement. Although revenue largely met market expectations, analysts pointed out that the company's profit after tax (PAT) and EBITDA fell short of estimates, prompting Jefferies to revise its valuation outlook. The brokerage also highlighted that much of the reported revenue growth was supported by foreign exchange gains rather than stronger underlying business momentum.

| Key Concern | Weak PAT and EBITDA |
The biggest trigger behind Tuesday's decline was the post earnings assessment by Jefferies, which lowered its target price on UPL after the company's quarterly profitability missed expectations. According to the brokerage, revenue growth was broadly in line with estimates, but operating earnings remained weaker than anticipated despite inventory related gains during the quarter.
Jefferies also observed that the company's revenue growth was largely supported by favourable foreign exchange movements rather than broad based operational improvement. While inventory gains provided some support to earnings, EBITDA still remained below expectations. The brokerage further noted that working capital increased during the quarter, whereas net debt remained largely unchanged on a year on year basis, suggesting that balance sheet improvement was slower than anticipated.
UPL reported revenue from operations of ₹10,181 crore during the April to June quarter, registering a 10.47% year on year increase compared with ₹9,216 crore reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. The revenue growth reflected resilient demand across several businesses and favourable currency movements.
However, profitability remained under pressure. The company reported a consolidated net profit of ₹10 crore, representing a sharp sequential decline from ₹1,061 crore reported during the March quarter. Although this was significantly lower on a quarter on quarter basis, it marked an improvement compared with the net loss of ₹88 crore reported during the same quarter last year. Investors tracking Q1 FY27 corporate earnings have increasingly focused on profit quality and operating margins rather than headline revenue growth, especially in sectors facing global demand uncertainty.
| Metric | Q1 FY27 | Q1 FY26 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue from Operations | ₹10,181 Crore | ₹9,216 Crore |
| Revenue Growth | 10.47% | |
| Net Profit | ₹10 Crore | Net Loss ₹88 Crore |
| Sequential Comparison | Down from ₹1,061 Crore |
Despite the weak market reaction, UPL's management maintained a positive outlook for the business. Chairman and Group CEO Jai Shroff said that rising global food demand continues to support long term opportunities across seeds, crop protection and biological solutions despite ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty.
According to the management, the company has started FY27 with profitable growth supported by its integrated business platforms. UPL also believes there is significant long term value creation potential through the proposed global crop protection platform, alongside unlocking value from its seeds and post harvest businesses while leveraging shared manufacturing, research and development and innovation capabilities.
Although Jefferies reduced its target price to ₹715, the brokerage continues to expect EBITDA growth of around 14% during FY27. However, analysts believe the pace of earnings recovery will depend on stronger operating performance rather than foreign exchange benefits or one time inventory gains.
The brokerage also pointed out that UPL shares have already declined significantly during the current calendar year, reflecting broader concerns around profitability, global agrochemical demand and margin recovery. Investors will now closely monitor future quarters to assess whether the company's operational improvements translate into sustainable earnings growth.
| Particulars | Details |
|---|---|
| Target Price | ₹715 |
| Revenue | Broadly In Line |
| EBITDA | Below Estimates |
| Working Capital | Increased |
| Net Debt | Largely Flat YoY |
| FY27 EBITDA Growth Estimate | Around 14% |
Going forward, investors are likely to focus on margin recovery, operating cash flows, debt reduction and the performance of UPL's crop protection business. The execution of its proposed global crop protection platform, combined with growth in seeds and biological solutions, will remain important drivers of long term shareholder value.
While the latest quarterly revenue indicates continued demand across key businesses, future stock performance will largely depend on whether UPL can improve profitability and deliver stronger operating earnings over the coming quarters. Investors following UPL share price and broader stock market news will be watching upcoming quarterly results for clearer signs of sustainable earnings recovery.
