Synopsis
Kalyan Jewellers share price fell after Q1 FY27 results despite strong revenue and profit growth as margin pressure disappointed investors. Citi raised its target price to ₹800, citing long term growth potential, expansion plans, improving balance sheet and sustained jewellery demand.

Kalyan Jewellers India share price came under pressure on Wednesday after the company reported its Q1 FY27 results, as investors reacted to weaker than expected operating margins despite robust revenue and profit growth. The stock slipped in early trade even after global brokerage Citi maintained its Buy rating and increased its target price from ₹750 to ₹800 per share, indicating continued confidence in the company's long term growth story.
The decline reflects the market's focus on profitability rather than topline growth. While Kalyan Jewellers delivered strong revenue expansion, analysts pointed out that higher promotional spending, increased old gold exchange transactions and a greater contribution from franchise stores weighed on margins during the quarter. Investors also booked profits after the stock had rallied nearly 67% in less than a month.

| Particulars | Details |
|---|---|
| Company | Kalyan Jewellers India |
| Share Price Movement | Declined After Q1 Results |
| Net Profit | ₹348.7 Crore (Up 32% YoY) |
| Revenue | ₹10,588.9 Crore (Up 45.7% YoY) |
| EBITDA | ₹632.5 Crore (Up 24.5% YoY) |
| EBITDA Margin | 6% vs 7% Last Year |
| Citi Rating | Buy |
| Citi Target Price | ₹800 |
The biggest reason behind the weakness in the stock was the margin disappointment. Although the company reported 45.7% year on year revenue growth and a 32% increase in net profit, the EBITDA margin narrowed to 6% from 7% in the corresponding quarter last year.
According to Citi, profitability came in below expectations despite revenue remaining broadly in line with estimates. The brokerage noted that the company experienced higher old gold exchange transactions, increased promotional expenses and a larger contribution from franchise stores, all of which reduced operating margins during the quarter. These factors overshadowed the otherwise healthy growth in sales and earnings.
| Financial Metric | Q1 FY27 | YoY Growth |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | ₹10,588.9 Crore | 45.7% |
| Net Profit | ₹348.7 Crore | 32% |
| EBITDA | ₹632.5 Crore | 24.5% |
| EBITDA Margin | 6% | Lower from 7% |
Despite highlighting the margin pressure, Citi remained positive on the company's long term prospects. The brokerage retained its Buy recommendation and increased its target price to ₹800, suggesting that it still sees meaningful upside from current levels.
After adjusting for a ₹41 crore customs duty related inventory benefit, Citi estimated that EBITDA and adjusted profit after tax still increased on a yearly basis. However, both adjusted EBITDA and adjusted profit remained below the brokerage's internal expectations, explaining the cautious market reaction immediately after the results.
The brokerage also stated that the inventory gain resulting from the customs duty changes was not retained as additional profit. Instead, the company reinvested that benefit into exchange offers and promotional campaigns to attract customers and strengthen demand.
| Parameter | Citi's View |
|---|---|
| Rating | Buy |
| Target Price | Raised to ₹800 |
| Revenue Growth | Broadly In Line |
| Margin Performance | Below Expectations |
| Long Term Outlook | Positive |
| Near Term View | Margin Pressure May Continue |
Apart from quarterly earnings, Citi highlighted the company's improving financial position as another positive factor. Kalyan Jewellers has entered into an agreement to sell non core real estate worth ₹100 crore and expects an additional ₹200 crore worth of collateral to be released during FY27.
These initiatives are expected to improve liquidity, strengthen the balance sheet and provide greater financial flexibility as the company continues expanding its retail network across India and international markets.
| Growth Driver | Expected Impact |
|---|---|
| Retail Expansion | Higher Revenue Growth |
| Strong Jewellery Demand | Better Sales Momentum |
| Non Core Asset Monetisation | Stronger Balance Sheet |
| Collateral Release | Improved Financial Flexibility |
| Citi Buy Rating | Positive Long Term Sentiment |
The correction also reflects the sharp rally the stock had witnessed before the results announcement. Kalyan Jewellers had gained nearly 67% in less than one month, adding around ₹24,500 crore to its market capitalisation. Such strong rallies often lead investors to book profits if quarterly earnings fail to comfortably exceed expectations.
Although revenue and profit growth remained healthy, the market focused more on margin compression, which is considered an important indicator of operational efficiency in the jewellery retail business.
Investors will now closely monitor whether Kalyan Jewellers can improve operating margins over the coming quarters while maintaining its strong revenue growth. Expansion of the retail network, festive season demand, same store sales growth and the impact of promotional spending will remain key factors influencing future earnings.
The company's balance sheet improvement, expansion strategy and sustained consumer demand continue to support the long term outlook. However, the pace of margin recovery will likely remain one of the most important drivers of investor sentiment in the near term.
