Synopsis
HAL's UH-M naval helicopter prototype is ready for a November maiden flight, with folding rotors and higher engine power for ship-based operations.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is preparing to conduct the maiden flight of its Utility Helicopter-Marine (UH-M) prototype around November, as the company moves ahead with its effort to develop a helicopter designed for ship-based operations.
HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K. has confirmed that the first UH-M prototype has been built and is on track for its first flight. The twin-engine helicopter is being developed around the operating requirements of the Indian Navy and is intended to operate from the decks of frontline warships.
The programme follows a Ministry of Defence Request for Information (RFI) for 76 Naval Utility Helicopters, comprising 51 helicopters for the Indian Navy and 25 for the Indian Coast Guard.
The UH-M is based on the indigenous ALH-Dhruv platform, but HAL has designed the maritime version around the space and operating limits of naval ships.
One of the main changes is the use of folding main rotor blades. The feature is intended to allow the helicopter to fit inside the limited hangar space available on frigates and destroyers.
HAL is also working on upgraded flight-control systems and higher engine output. The helicopter uses modified Shakti engines, with the additional power intended to support take-offs and landings from ships in high winds and difficult sea conditions.
The UH-M is being developed as a utility helicopter with a flexible cabin configuration.
Its cabin can be changed from a standard passenger arrangement to a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) configuration. This would allow injured personnel to be moved from warships to shore-based medical facilities.
The helicopter is therefore being designed for more than routine personnel transport and could support different missions depending on the Navy's operational requirements.
The Indian Navy already operates a limited number of naval variants of the ALH-Dhruv. However, earlier versions faced limitations during ship-borne trials and were subsequently restricted to land-based naval stations.
The UH-M addresses some of those requirements through features such as folding rotor blades and systems designed specifically for deck operations.
HAL is also facing competition from foreign helicopter manufacturers offering maritime helicopters already operated by other navies.
The planned November maiden flight will be the beginning of the UH-M's flight-test programme rather than the end of development.
After the first flight, the prototype is expected to undergo further trials and development. The results of these tests will be important before any decision is taken on mass production and formal induction into the Indian Navy or Coast Guard.
For HAL, the programme also provides an opportunity to develop a dedicated indigenous maritime utility helicopter for India's naval aviation requirements.
