The agreement builds on a long-standing relationship between IndiGo and CFM International, which began in 2016 when the airline operated Airbus A320ceo aircraft powered by CFM56-5B engines.
In 2019, IndiGo selected LEAP-1A engines for its growing Airbus A320neo fleet. Today, the airline operates more than 375 Airbus A320 and A321 Family aircraft powered by CFM engines.
Willie Walsh, Chief Executive Officer Designate at IndiGo, said CFM has been a trusted partner throughout the airline's expansion and noted that the reliability of the LEAP engine supports IndiGo's operational scale and sustainability goals.
Apart from supplying engines, CFM International will support the development of IndiGo's engine Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in India.
The collaboration comes as Safran, one of CFM's parent companies, continues expanding its aerospace presence in India. The company recently inaugurated its largest LEAP engine MRO facility, covering 45,000 square metres, with the capacity to handle up to 300 engine shop visits annually once fully operational.
The MRO partnership is expected to strengthen IndiGo's maintenance capabilities, reduce turnaround times and support its rapidly expanding fleet.
India has emerged as CFM International's third-largest market, with more than 400 LEAP-powered aircraft currently in service across five Indian airlines. The company also has around 2,000 LEAP engines on order, highlighting the continued growth of India's commercial aviation sector.
H. Lawrence Culp Jr., Chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace, said LEAP engines now deliver up to twice the time on wing in demanding operating environments compared with their initial years of service.
Olivier Andriès, CEO of Safran, said the latest agreement reflects customer confidence in the LEAP engine platform and reaffirmed the company's commitment to investing in India's aerospace manufacturing and MRO ecosystem.
The agreement supports IndiGo's fleet expansion strategy while strengthening India's aviation infrastructure through local engine maintenance capabilities. As airlines continue to add aircraft to meet rising passenger demand, investments in engine servicing and MRO facilities are expected to play a key role in improving operational efficiency and reducing maintenance costs.
The record engine order also reinforces IndiGo's position as one of the world's fastest-growing airlines and highlights India's increasing importance in the global aviation supply chain.
IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, is India's largest airline by market share and fleet size. The carrier operates an extensive domestic and international network using primarily the Airbus A320 Family aircraft and has one of the world's largest aircraft order books. CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines, is one of the world's leading manufacturers of commercial aircraft engines.
IndiGo has signed an MoU with CFM International to purchase more than 1,000 LEAP-1A engines that will power 510 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft.
The agreement represents the largest single order for LEAP engines in CFM International's history and supports IndiGo's long-term fleet expansion plans.
Besides engine supply, the agreement includes support for establishing IndiGo's engine MRO facility in India and a long-term material services agreement for spare parts and maintenance.
According to the company, IndiGo currently operates more than 375 Airbus A320 and A321 Family aircraft, with additional aircraft scheduled for delivery in the coming years.
