Coal India is expanding beyond traditional coal mining through gasification, renewable energy, battery storage, thermal power and critical minerals, as part of its long-term diversification strategy.

Coal India Limited is expanding beyond traditional coal mining through coal gasification, thermal power, renewable energy, energy storage and critical minerals.
The Ministry of Coal said the strategy aims to support energy security, reduce imports, promote domestic technology and support low carbon growth.
| Business segment | Key initiatives |
|---|---|
| Coal gasification | Urea, chemicals, ammonium nitrate and synthetic natural gas |
| Thermal power | 2×800 MW Chandrapura expansion |
| Renewable energy | Solar and floating solar projects |
| Energy storage | Battery Energy Storage Systems |
| Critical minerals | Graphite and rare earth elements |
Coal India is developing four coal to chemicals projects with an estimated investment of around Rs 69,346 crore.
The projects will produce urea, ammonium nitrate, synthetic natural gas and methanol. The company is also testing underground coal gasification through a pilot project in Eastern Coalfields.
Coal India and Damodar Valley Corporation are developing a 2×800 MW ultra supercritical power project at Chandrapura through a 50:50 joint venture.
The company has commissioned around 550 MW of solar capacity. Its plans also include captive solar projects, utility scale plants and a 20 MW AC floating solar project at Chilwa Taal in Gorakhpur.
Coal India is developing battery storage projects, including a 187.5 MW/750 MWh project in Telangana and an 80 MW/320 MWh portfolio across four locations in Odisha.
It is also exploring graphite, rare earth elements and other critical minerals. The proposed graphite value chain includes mining, purification, coating and anode material production.
Investors will track project execution, capital allocation, technology testing and commercial returns as Coal India enters new sectors.
The company plans to use joint ventures and strategic partnerships to access technology, expertise and new markets.
Coal India's diversification could expand its presence in renewable energy, power, energy storage and critical minerals.
However, project execution, investment requirements and commercial viability will remain important factors for investors.
