Synopsis
LightFury Games raises $11 million led by top investors and cricketers to build its flagship eCricket game. Here’s a deep analysis of the strategy and market opportunity.
India’s gaming ecosystem is quietly entering a new phase where capital, celebrity influence, and advanced technology are converging to build globally competitive titles. The latest funding round by LightFury Games, backed by high-profile investors including MS Dhoni, signals a deeper shift in how gaming startups are being positioned not just as entertainment products but as scalable digital platforms. With $11 million raised in a pre-Series A round, the company is now focusing on building a premium cricket gaming experience that aims to compete at a global level.
LightFury Games has raised approximately** $11 million**, taking its total funding to nearly $20 million within two years of inception. This rapid capital inflow highlights strong investor conviction in India’s gaming market, particularly in sports-based interactive experiences.
Unlike earlier gaming startups that focused on casual or hyperlocal content, LightFury is targeting a high-quality, AAA-style experience powered by advanced game engines. The flagship product, eCricket, is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, which is typically associated with console-level graphics and performance.
Data suggests rising mobile gaming adoption in India This leads to higher demand for premium gaming experiences Which results in increased investor interest in high-quality studios
This positions LightFury as part of a new wave of gaming companies aiming for global relevance rather than domestic scale alone.

The presence of multiple cricketers as investors is not just symbolic. It creates a powerful alignment between the sport, the audience, and the product being developed.
The involvement of MS Dhoni in LightFury Games is more than just a celebrity endorsement; it reflects a calculated shift toward the fast-growing digital gaming ecosystem. Dhoni has consistently backed ventures that align with long-term consumer trends, and his investment here signals strong confidence in the scalability of sports-based gaming platforms. With cricket being one of the most followed sports globally, his association adds instant credibility and visibility to the eCricket project. More importantly, it bridges the gap between real-world cricket fandom and digital engagement, creating a powerful ecosystem where fans are not just viewers but active participants in the game.
Founded in 2024, LightFury Games is a Bengaluru-based studio focused on building mobile-first, high-quality gaming experiences. The founding team brings expertise across gaming, product development, and technology.
The company’s core focus includes:
• Developing immersive sports-based games
• Leveraging advanced gaming engines
• Building scalable live-service platforms
This approach differentiates it from traditional mobile gaming studios that prioritize quick monetisation over long-term engagement.
The flagship game, eCricket, is designed to replicate real-world cricket dynamics through advanced gameplay systems. It aims to combine realism with competitive depth.
Key features include:
• Physics-driven gameplay mechanics
• Tactical batting and bowling systems
• AI-powered commentary
• Broadcast-style presentation
The game also has rights to over 600 professional cricketers, including global stars, which adds authenticity and enhances user engagement.
One of the most underappreciated aspects of this funding round is the strategic role of athlete investors. Players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya bring not just capital but massive audience reach.
This creates:
• Built-in marketing leverage
• Strong brand credibility
• Direct access to cricket fan communities
This model is increasingly being used globally, where athletes act as both investors and growth accelerators.
A common misconception is that cricket games are limited to Indian audiences. In reality, cricket has a global fan base across regions like the UK, Australia, and parts of Africa, making it a viable international gaming category.
Another misunderstanding is that mobile games cannot deliver AAA experiences. Advances in mobile hardware and game engines are rapidly closing the gap between mobile and console gaming.
While many assume premium pricing is necessary for high-quality games, LightFury is adopting a free-to-play model. This allows rapid user acquisition while monetising through in-app purchases such as player cards and upgrades.
This suggests that scale, not upfront pricing, will be the primary driver of success.
The success of LightFury and eCricket will depend on several key factors:
• User adoption at launch
• Retention through live content updates
• Monetisation efficiency
• Competition from global gaming studios
If execution is strong, the game could establish itself as a leading sports title in the global mobile gaming market.
For investors, the gaming sector is evolving toward high-quality, scalable platforms. Tracking companies that combine technology, content, and distribution advantages will be key.
For startups, the focus should shift toward building differentiated products rather than competing in crowded casual gaming segments.
For users, this signals the arrival of more immersive and competitive gaming experiences on mobile devices.
The $11 million funding round positions LightFury Games as a serious contender in the global gaming landscape. Backed by strategic investors and leading athletes like MS Dhoni, the company is attempting to redefine cricket gaming through technology and scale. The real opportunity lies not just in creating a game but in building a long-term gaming platform that can evolve with its user base and compete internationally.
eCricket is a mobile-first cricket game developed by LightFury Games, expected to launch in 2026 with advanced gameplay and global player integrations.
Cricketers bring brand value, audience reach, and strategic alignment with sports-based games, making them valuable partners beyond just financial investment.
The company will use a free-to-play model with in-app purchases such as player cards, cosmetic upgrades, and season passes to generate revenue.
