Synopsis
Sensex and Nifty rally as IT and banking stocks gain. Explore key market triggers, top movers, crude oil trends and important Nifty levels.

The Sensex surged over 1,400 points to 74,189 on October 15, 2026, while the Nifty climbed over 380 points above 23,000. Gains in IT, banking and consumer stocks supported the rebound after the previous session's decline.
However, smallcap and microcap stocks remained under pressure, with some shares falling as much as 6%. India VIX also rose, signalling continued market volatility.
IT stocks such as TCS, Infosys, HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra gained for a third consecutive session, supported by earnings optimism following HCL Technologies' results.
Geojit Investments' Chief Investment Strategist VK Vijayakumar said the correction in global AI stocks could benefit Indian markets if foreign institutional investors reduce their preference for AI linked stocks and reconsider Indian equities.
However, global markets remained weak after US inflation data for September came in higher than expected. Asian equities declined, while losses in AI related stocks weighed on Wall Street.
Oil prices fell as investors assessed supply risks from shipping attacks in the Strait of Hormuz alongside US efforts to ease petroleum transport costs by relaxing sanctions on vessels.
Brent crude fell $1.76, or 1.75%, to $104 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate declined $1.02, or 1.07%, to $94.07.
Lower crude prices can ease pressure on India's import bill and inflation, although geopolitical risks remain a concern.
The Indian rupee opened 0.2% higher at 94.92 against the US dollar, compared with its previous close of 95.15. The dollar weakened after reaching an 18 month high overnight.
Currency movements remain important for investor sentiment, foreign fund flows and India's import costs.
October 15 was the Sensex weekly expiry, which can increase intraday price swings as traders close or roll over futures and options positions.
Short covering may push indices higher, while fresh selling and long position unwinding can reverse gains. The expiry may therefore have contributed to market volatility, although the report does not quantify its impact on the rally.
TCS, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and ITC were among the leading Sensex gainers.
BEL, Adani Ports, Trent, Power Grid, SBI, Larsen & Toubro and NTPC were among the laggards. In the broader market, smallcap and microcap indices fell by up to 1.5%, highlighting the uneven nature of the recovery.
Geojit's Chief Market Strategist Anand James identified 23,200 to 23,600 as potential upside levels for the Nifty. He said the 22,550 to 22,788 range was important for directional confirmation. A move below 22,550 could expose the index to 22,070.
These are technical levels, not guaranteed targets. Investors should monitor market breadth, global cues, crude prices and foreign fund flows as trading continues.
