Synopsis
Sensex fell over 500 points as foreign investors continued selling and IT stocks weakened. HCL Tech results, SIP inflows and crude oil also shaped market sentiment.

The Indian stock market extended its losses on Monday, October 12, with the Sensex falling more than 500 points and the Nifty 50 slipping below 22,400 during afternoon trade. Selling pressure in technology, FMCG and public sector banking stocks weighed on the benchmark indices, while the Bank Nifty dropped nearly 1%.
The decline came amid uncertainty over Middle East tensions, foreign investor selling and movements in crude oil prices. Brent crude traded below $103 a barrel during the session, even as concerns about attacks on shipping routes and regional security remained in focus.
The broader market showed relative strength. The Nifty Smallcap 100 rose more than 1%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 gained around 0.1%. This divergence indicated that selling pressure was heavier in large benchmark stocks than across the entire market.
The Nifty 50 fell 153.80 points, or 0.68%, to 22,366.65, close to its intraday low of 22,352.35. The index tested the 22,350 level, which market participants were watching as a support area, but the supplied market update did not confirm a decisive break below it.
The Sensex also remained under pressure, falling more than 400 points in a later market update after opening higher earlier in the day. The conflicting intraday snapshots reflect how market conditions changed during the session. At the opening, the Sensex had gained 298.99 points to 72,771.32, while the Nifty 50 opened at 22,593.20, up 0.41%.
| Market indicator | Reported level or movement |
|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 22,366.65 |
| Nifty 50 change | Down 153.80 points, or 0.68% |
| Nifty 50 intraday low | 22,352.35 |
| Sensex | Down more than 500 points during afternoon trade |
| Bank Nifty | Down nearly 1% |
| Nifty Smallcap 100 | Up more than 1% |
| Nifty Midcap 100 | Up around 0.1% |
Technology, FMCG, banking and selected large companies were among the main sources of pressure. Tech Mahindra, ITC, State Bank of India, Bharti Airtel, Larsen & Toubro and NTPC featured among the Nifty 50 losers in the supplied updates.
Tech Mahindra fell more than 4% amid weakness in US telecom stocks. T Mobile dropped 13%, AT&T fell 9.8% and Verizon lost 8.7% amid concerns about SpaceX's expanding wireless ambitions. Technology services companies with substantial telecom exposure may face questions about future client spending when competition changes across the communications industry.
Telecom accounted for 32.3% of Tech Mahindra's Q1 FY27 revenue, making the sector particularly relevant to the company's business outlook. The effect of greater competition on telecom technology spending remained uncertain.
The banking index also weakened after giving up early gains. Axis Bank, Federal Bank, SBI, Punjab National Bank and ICICI Bank were among the Bank Nifty's top losers. Sectoral performance was mixed across the session, with auto, pharma, realty and media stocks finding buyers at different points.
HCL Technologies shares gained nearly 2% ahead of the company's September quarter results announcement. The market was watching revenue growth, profitability and management commentary on demand, artificial intelligence and wage increases.
Estimates available ahead of the results pointed to sequential growth in revenue and profit. These figures were forecasts, not confirmed financial results.
| HCL Technologies Q2 FY27 estimate | Expected figure |
|---|---|
| Revenue | Rs 35,547 crore |
| Previous quarter revenue | Rs 34,579 crore |
| Sequential revenue growth | 2.8% |
| Net profit | Rs 4,875 crore |
| Sequential profit growth | 5.4% |
| Earnings before interest and tax | Rs 6,243 crore |
| Expected operating margin | 17.56% |
| Expected margin expansion | 70 basis points |
Investors were also watching for constant currency revenue growth of 2.5% to 3%, including an estimated 0.8% contribution from inorganic growth. Commentary on AI revenue, wage hikes, demand conditions and the engineering and research and development business could help clarify the company's operating outlook.
Geopolitical uncertainty continued to influence market sentiment. Reports of another attack by Iran backed Houthi forces on Saudi Arabia's King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh added to concerns about security in the Middle East. Separately, attacks on commercial shipping raised questions about the safety of maritime routes around the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
Crude oil prices moved lower amid expectations of additional Russian fuel supplies and news of a proposed energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. US President Donald Trump said the two countries had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire. Russia also partially lifted its diesel export ban, allowing 500,000 metric tonnes of fuel to reach international markets.
Brent crude futures were reported at $102.53 a barrel, down 2.09%, while US West Texas Intermediate crude stood at $89.81, down 2.22%. Another intraday update placed Brent near $105.40, highlighting the different price snapshots in the supplied information.
Lower crude prices can ease pressure on fuel importing countries such as India, but the outlook remains sensitive to actual supply changes and further geopolitical developments. The direction of oil prices could also affect inflation expectations, currency movements and the outlook for companies with high energy costs.
Foreign institutional investors continued to sell Indian equities in 2026. Their net selling crossed Rs 3.04 lakh crore for the year, almost twice the Rs 1.66 lakh crore sold during 2025.
On Friday, foreign investors sold equities worth Rs 3,569 crore even as domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 4,743 crore. Domestic buying helped support the market during that session, but it did not eliminate the pressure from overseas outflows.
The selling intensified during October. The supplied exchange and depository figures showed foreign investor sales of Rs 9,232 crore on October 1, Rs 4,699 crore on Monday, Rs 6,121 crore on Wednesday and Rs 12,944 crore on Thursday, when the Nifty 50 touched its lowest level of 2026.
Investors tracking the Indian stock market's response to rising crude prices can also monitor whether foreign selling continues and whether domestic institutional buying is sufficient to absorb the supply of shares. The earlier Sensex and Nifty market update provides further context on benchmark index movements.
September data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India showed continued investment through systematic investment plans, alongside substantial net outflows from the mutual fund industry as a whole. SIP contributions rose slightly from August, while total industry assets under management fell as portfolio valuations came under pressure.
| Mutual fund indicator | August 2026 | September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| SIP inflows | Rs 32,297 crore | Rs 32,490 crore |
| Gold ETF inflows | Rs 2,597 crore | Rs 4,451 crore |
| Total industry assets under management | Rs 87.08 lakh crore | Rs 82.64 lakh crore |
| Net industry flows | Inflows of Rs 41,353 crore | Outflows of Rs 1.33 lakh crore |
The industry recorded net outflows of Rs 1.33 lakh crore in September, compared with net inflows of Rs 41,353 crore in August. Fixed income schemes accounted for outflows of Rs 1.83 lakh crore. Meanwhile, gold exchange traded funds attracted Rs 4,451 crore, an increase of about 71.4% from August.
The data points to different trends within the same industry. SIP contributions increased, but the total asset base contracted. Changes in market prices and withdrawals from fixed income schemes both matter when interpreting monthly industry figures.
Several company specific developments stood out despite the weakness in the benchmark indices.
Swaraj Engines rose 7.14% to Rs 3,684.50 after reporting a 21.9% year on year increase in second quarter profit to Rs 60.6 crore. Revenue increased 26% to Rs 635 crore, while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation rose 27.2% to Rs 86.5 crore. Its operating margin was 13.6%, compared with 13.5% a year earlier.
Rajesh Power Services gained more than 7% after announcing turnkey contracts worth Rs 471.92 crore, including taxes, from Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Limited. The work involves improvements to electricity distribution infrastructure in Gujarat. The company said the orders would take its order book closer to Rs 4,000 crore and provide about 18 months of execution visibility.
Tata Power Renewable Energy commissioned 419 MW of utility scale projects in the second quarter of FY27, compared with 182 MW in the same quarter a year earlier. It also executed 131.2 MWh of storage projects during the quarter.
In contrast, Avenue Supermarts, which operates DMart, fell more than 4% after its September quarter profit missed expectations. Net profit rose 7.6% year on year to Rs 804 crore, below the estimate of Rs 879 crore. Jefferies reduced its target price to Rs 4,000 from Rs 4,500 and cut its earnings estimates by 2% to 3%.
Monday's trading showed a clear difference between weakness in the largest stocks and relative strength in smaller companies. Benchmark indices came under pressure as technology, consumer goods and banking stocks fell, while the Smallcap 100 index gained more than 1%. Such differences matter because headline index movements do not describe the performance of every listed company.
Foreign investor flows and global risk factors remain relevant to the near term outlook. Higher uncertainty around the Middle East can affect oil prices, while changes in crude prices can influence expectations for India's inflation and currency. The rupee opened at 95.76 against the US dollar, gaining 97 paise from its previous close of 96.73.
The Reserve Bank of India's measures aimed at easing dollar demand and limiting excessive foreign exchange positioning were also being watched. Currency market participants identified 96.70 to 97.00 as a resistance area for the dollar against the rupee, while 95.50 was among the levels being monitored for a possible extension of the rupee's recovery. These were market assessments, not confirmed future outcomes.
The next sessions will be shaped by company earnings, inflation data and developments in global markets. The following events and indicators are in focus:
The primary market will also remain active. Tonbo Imaging India's IPO is scheduled to open on October 15 and close on October 19, with a price band of Rs 665 to Rs 700 per share. The company aims to raise up to Rs 852 crore through an offer for sale by existing shareholders.
The coming sessions will help establish whether benchmark indices can hold the 22,350 area on the Nifty 50 while investors assess earnings and global economic signals. The level remains a point to monitor, not a confirmed floor for the market.
The Sensex fell more than 500 points during afternoon trade on October 12, 2026, as selling affected technology, FMCG and banking stocks. Global geopolitical uncertainty and sustained foreign investor selling also weighed on sentiment. The Nifty 50 slipped below 22,400 during the session.
The Nifty 50 stood at 22,366.65, down 153.80 points or 0.68%, in the reported intraday update. Its intraday low was 22,352.35. The index tested the 22,350 support area but had not decisively broken below it in that update.
Tech Mahindra shares fell more than 4% amid weakness in US telecom stocks. Telecom accounted for 32.3% of the company's Q1 FY27 revenue, making changes in the communications sector relevant to its business outlook. The impact of increased competition on telecom technology spending remained uncertain.
Foreign institutional investors recorded net selling of Rs 3.04 lakh crore in Indian equities during 2026 up to the reported period. This was almost twice the Rs 1.66 lakh crore sold during 2025. Domestic institutional investors bought Rs 4,743 crore of equities on the reported Friday, partly offsetting foreign selling.
Monthly SIP inflows reached Rs 32,490 crore in September 2026, compared with Rs 32,297 crore in August. Gold ETF inflows also increased to Rs 4,451 crore from Rs 2,597 crore. Despite these inflows, the mutual fund industry's total assets under management fell to Rs 82.64 lakh crore from Rs 87.08 lakh crore.
Investors will track HCL Technologies' quarterly results, India's September retail inflation data and US consumer inflation data scheduled for Wednesday. Foreign investor flows, the rupee and crude oil prices will also remain in focus. Tonbo Imaging India's IPO is scheduled to open on October 15.
