Synopsis
Petrol and diesel prices today across India, including the cheapest and costliest states, major city fuel rates and how petrol and diesel prices are decided.
Petrol and diesel prices are different across India mainly because taxes and other charges vary from state to state. The price also depends on crude oil prices, refining costs and the cost of moving fuel to petrol pumps.
On September 3, 2026, petrol was cheapest in Andaman and Nicobar Islands at ₹88.66 per litre and highest in Telangana at ₹115.71 per litre. For diesel, Andaman and Nicobar Islands was the cheapest at ₹84.56 per litre, while Kerala was the costliest at ₹104.40 per litre.
The price you pay at a petrol pump includes the fuel cost, central taxes, state taxes and the dealer's commission.
Since every state has different taxes, petrol and diesel prices are different across the country. This is why fuel can be cheaper in one state and much more expensive in another.
Fuel prices are generally revised every day at 6 am. Changes in crude oil prices, the rupee value and other costs can affect fuel prices, although the price at the pump can also depend on government taxes and other local charges.
The petrol price on September 3 showed a wide gap across states and Union Territories. Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the lowest rate at ₹88.66 per litre, while Telangana had the highest state level figure at ₹115.71 per litre.

| Telangana | ₹115.71 |
The difference between the lowest and highest state level petrol prices was ₹27.05 per litre. This means filling a 50 litre tank at the highest rate instead of the lowest rate would cost about ₹1,352.50 more.
There can also be differences within the same state. For example, Goodreturns identified Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh at ₹117.95 per litre, which was higher than the state's representative figure in its state level table.
Diesel also showed a significant difference between the cheapest and costliest markets. Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the lowest rate at ₹84.56 per litre, while Kerala recorded the highest state level figure at ₹104.40 per litre.

The difference is also visible among India's major cities. On September 3, Delhi had the lowest petrol and diesel prices among the four traditional metros in the supplied dataset, while Kolkata had the highest rates among those four cities.
| City | Petrol | Diesel |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | ₹102.12 | ₹95.20 |
| Mumbai | ₹111.21 | ₹97.83 |
| Kolkata | ₹113.51 | ₹99.82 |
| Chennai | ₹107.76 | ₹99.55 |
| Hyderabad | ₹115.71 | ₹103.84 |
| Bengaluru | ₹111.68 | ₹99.56 |

The biggest reason is the difference in state level taxation. Petrol and diesel are outside the GST system, so states levy their own taxes on these fuels. Different VAT or sales tax structures result in different retail prices.
Transport costs, dealer level differences and local pricing conditions can also create differences between cities or districts within the same state. This is why a state's representative price should not always be treated as the exact price at every fuel pump.
| Fuel | Cheapest | Costliest state level price | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | ₹88.66, Andaman and Nicobar | ₹115.71, Telangana | ₹27.05 |
| Diesel | ₹84.56, Andaman and Nicobar | ₹104.40, Kerala | ₹19.84 |
